2021 AWRA Rules Preview

2021 Rules Preview/Update - AWRA Official 

There will be a couple of rule changes for the 2021 season. These will be posted soon, but we wanted to get the word out early, particularly so that everybody can prepare Dirt Late Model WOMPS for the upcoming races.

2021 motor rules - We will be watching closely for tampering with motors.

2021 Class Changes 

The Euro-Spec class and the paper Modified class will be dropped.

The Dirt Late Model class will be added, General rules for DLM: Any currently legal Stock Car chassis. Bracing is allowed. Motor - JK Hawk 25 (JK303025) motor only. Any gearing. ProTrack Daytona Stocker lettered tires front and rear. Caveman Bodeez Dirt Late Model body only. Same clearance. These are basically the same rules that have been run successfully in Tennessee and North Carolina.

P1 Introduces New Design Inline Chassis to replace FCR 4 ½" Chassis

As most of you know, Parma's legendary and wildly popular "FCR" (First Class Racing) brass chassis has been out of production and difficult to find for some time now. 

P1 Slotcars is now offering this modern designed alternative to the venerable FCR 4 1/2" chassis.

AWRA Q1 2021 Schedule of Events

 The AWRA 2021 season will start on January 2nd. Time to get those WOMPS ready to rumble!

The Dirt Late Model class will replace the Euro-Spec class in 2021. 

The Dirt Late Models will race on ovals and the rules will allow bracing and other chassis modifications and any gearing. 

The motor will be a JK Hawk 25 and the legal body will be a Caveman Bodeez Dirt Late Model. Tires will be Pro-Track Daytona Stockers front and back.

John Cukras 1944-2002

John Cukras, one of the most famous of the salaried professional slot car racers from "the heyday" of the late 1960s has passed away due to complications from recent lung surgery.

John was a heavy smoker during much of his life and most period photos show him with a cigarette held in his mouth while racing.

John was said to be paid a salary somewhere between $30,000 and $50,000 ($233,881.44 to $389,802.40 in 2020s dollars) a year for racing slot cars and various product development activities for San Leando's (CA) Mura slot car products owned by Ron Mura. Mura was at one time a well-known producer of slot car motors and other components.

The story goes that John at one time worked or consulted for Aurora plastics company and had a hand in the design of what became the A/FX line of HO slot cars that were enjoyed by millions. John was also involved in the design of the later G-Plus and Mega G-Plus HO scale slot cars.

John's fellow Pro racers felt that John was as close to a "natural" racer as anybody then or now. John was without question a force to be reckoned with in any 1/24th scale race he entered.

John really made his mark in 1966, winning the first "East-West" race sponsored by Bob Rule's Champion of Chamblee (GA) and held in Memphis, TN. This race was one of only 3 national championship races run with open-wheel or "formula" style scale race cars before the aerodynamic advantages of Can-Am style sports car scale bodies were realized.

Cukras was one of a handful of participants invited to visit Elvis Presley's hobby room at Graceland featuring a full-size 8-lane commercial slot car track.

John also took a well-deserved victory at the "Hemisphere" race in July 1968 held in San Antonio, TX. Winning this race made John the undisputed best of the best Number One slot car driver and builder in the world. 

Model Car Journal described the Hemisphere race as "...violent, blazingly fast, immensely destructive sort of racing and nobody is better at it than Cukras". John's victory earned him $350.00 in cash which would be over $2,600.00 in 2020s dollars. The Hemisphere race IIRC was the first "pro" race won using the modern style Parma/Russkit pistol grip hand controller. Previous races were won with various types of thumb-operated controller.

John was the subject of an article written by Leon "Dutch" Mandel and published in Car and Driver magazine in early 1969. The article was entitled "Soooooo-krus...The Sound of Teenage Money" and was one of the best-known writings about the hobby/sport in mainstream media. The article is an interesting read and can be found in PDF form with a little web searching.

John was one of the members of the Southern California racing community that came up with the framework for "retro" slot car racing which eventually spread across the country and the world.

Cukras participated in an all-star retro race held at Buena Park (CA) Raceway in 2008 with many past Pro racers of legendary driving and building ability.

A few years ago on the Slotcar Superstar blog John wrote: 

"I had what it took for this type of competition. Hand-eye coordination, depth perception, model-building skills, perseverance, super steady nerves, and a love of racing. The big races I competed in and often won were long events with hundreds of entries. One main event at a big race finished at 8:00 a.m. Easter Sunday morning after racing all through the previous night!" A giant of our hobby/sport has left us. Godspeed "John the Jet".

2020 Grand Prix de Concord

The AWRA Grand Prix WOMPS are coming to Concord! 

If you have raced the Grand Prix cars in Marietta, Georgia, or in Cleveland, Tennessee, then you know that they are a blast to drive. They are quick, and they actually handle well. The flat track at The Slot Car Track in Concord, North Carolina will be a perfect venue for the Grand Prix WOMPS.

So, just what is a Grand Prix WOMP? Essentially, it is an AWRA Stock Car chassis with an open-wheel body. 

Bracing is allowed in this class, as well as all of the mods allowed in the Stock Car class. The Grand Prix bodies provide a lot of down-force, and the cars do actually handle, and they are pretty peppy, too.

Also on the program for November 7th is the Concord 500 Stock Car race on the Oval and the Outlaw legends on the King Cobra.

The recently announced JK RTR line all feature the 4" C26/C43 "Aeolos" Chassis, Hawk 7 motor, 64P gearing 3/32"axles with a selection of pre-painted (single and multi color) and custom finished .010" Lexan Prototype, Sports-GT, Stock Car, and Retro Sports bodies.

These cars are exceptionally high performance and are designed for use on commercial style routed wood race tracks. Not suitable for sectional track use without modification.

Announcements from Mossetti Racing

NEW ALUMINUM FLEXI PANS !!

In response to issues that some racers are experiencing with the body mount uprights on aluminum pans breaking - The newly redesigned versions have much stronger support than before.

Mossetti Racing will initiate an aluminum pan exchange program via the raceways. Racers will be able to bring their pans, either broken, new, or used to their local raceway. 

The raceway will collect all the pans and return them to Mossetti Racing and we will issue replacements, postage will be compensated. 

The new pans will be shipped back to the raceway so they can return them to the racers. This program will be in effect for approximately 2 months, giving enough time for racers to get their replacement pans to the raceway - more details will be announced soon.

The New pans will come in 4 variations, the same basic design as before, but with the new Stronger Body Mount uprights.

New GTP Body Now Available From Ralph Thorne Racing

Strong and ready for battle the "Viking" GTP body is based on our very successful Renegade body platform with a few small but very effective changes. Most noticeably we've narrowed the body to 83 mm wide which reduces overall drag, increases straight-line speed, and makes the body easier to mount. 

The height and side profile of the body remains the same but the front fenders have been lowered in the middle which continues to lower the drag and it also allowed us to create a second vertical service inside the body to create side force and keep the nose plated in cornering. The reshaping of the front fender has provided us a much stronger front end, and it is much more resistant to crash damage. Our body team, once again, knocked it out of the park with new and unique ideas and features not typically seen on slot car bodies which continues to keep us ahead of the curve! Upstate Speedway needs our help

Upstate Speedway needs our help. This is veteran-owned slot car racing and entertainment business. They have multiple tracks and a drag strip.

They have been working diligently to get the tracks ready to run but have encountered problems with wiring and lap counters. Unfortunately no local track building talent is available in their area.

Gary Gerding has offered to help them get their tracks "ship shape" so that they can open to the public and have races. The owner is asking the slot car racing community for donations to cover Gary's expenses. I am sure that Gary is giving them a deal since his estimate for services seems cheap.

Even though Upstate may not be "near" you, won't you please consider donating so we can have another world-class raceway open for business here in the U.S.A. ?
