Jimmie Johnson joins Gainsco team for Rolex 24

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 2, 2009) - A switch to Chevrolet power for the 2010 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 Daytona Prototype season, and the third-year return of the all-American champion driver lineup of Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty, Jimmie Johnson and Jimmy Vasser for the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, Jan. 30-31, were announced today by GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team owner Bob Stallings.
GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing will change to Chevrolet engines after the team won 12 races and two Grand-Am Rolex Series Championships with Pontiac power the last three seasons. The 5-liter engine now in the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance "Red Dragon" Daytona Prototype is Chevy's race-prepared version of GM's iconic small-block V8 that is an American legend in its own right.
Red, White and Blue is also the binding theme of the driver lineup with two-time reigning Grand-Am Rolex Series Champions Gurney and Fogarty shooting for a record third Grand-Am Rolex Series driver title in 2010. The top Daytona Prototype duo will be joined by fellow champions Johnson and Vasser for the third consecutive year at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The teammates finished second in their first Rolex 24 together with GAINSCO in 2008 and backed it up with a seventh-place finish this past January in this year's edition of America's premier endurance race.
"All of us at GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing want to win our third Grand-Am Rolex Series Championships just as bad as we want to score a victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona," said Stallings, who was joined by the team's drivers today in making the announcements in a NASCAR/Grand-Am media teleconference. "We are honored to carry the great racing history of the Chevrolet bowtie in the Grand-Am Rolex Series and we feel very, very fortunate to have put together for the third year an unmatched lineup of American champion drivers in Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty, Jimmie Johnson and Jimmy Vasser."
Johnson, who recently clinched a record fourth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship, has raced in five of the last six Rolex 24 races, including the last two with GAINSCO. In addition to the second-place finish with GAINSCO in 2008, Johnson was also part of 2005's second-place Howard/Boss Motorsports Pontiac Crawford team. He made his first Rolex 24 start with the same team a year earlier and then returned in 2007 for not only the Rolex 24 but also that summer's Brumos Porsche 250 At Daytona with Riley Motorsports. Johnson turned to GAINSCO prior to the 2008 event when he was looking for a team capable of winning a race as tough as the Rolex 24.
"I've really enjoyed running with Bob and the GAINSCO team the past couple of years," Johnson said. "Anyone who knows Bob knows that he's very passionate about racing, and it shows in his team and his ability to bring out the best in everyone. Jon (Fogarty) and Alex (Gurney) are two of the best and I really enjoyed being teammates with them and Jimmy Vasser in the last two Rolex 24 hour events. Bob does a great job of keeping the team at the top, especially when you consider the competition from teams like Ganassi and some others. They are a threat each week and that says a lot about the team that Bob has put together."
Johnson, Gurney and Fogarty all led the 2008 Rolex 24 and joined Vasser in keeping the No. 99 in contention for the overall win throughout the race. Although Johnson brings a great deal of publicity and media attention to the GAINSCO team, the biggest benefit of having him back each year is his proven ability to win races and championships.
"We view Jimmie as a member of our team and we look forward to winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona together," Stallings said. "Jimmie is a terrific race car driver and has been a quick study driving the Red Dragon. He is very focused and highly competitive in every way imaginable. He is a champion and shares our strong desire to win the 24."
Lead team drivers Gurney and Fogarty, who won their first Rolex Series championship in 2007, are happy to have Johnson back again for the 2010 Rolex 24. Along with Vasser, who is back for a fifth season as GAINSCO's main endurance race specialist, the GAINSCO team will likely once again be one of the few, if not the only, all-American and all-Champion Daytona Prototype teams entered in the Rolex 24. Vasser is the 1996 CART Champ Car World Series champion.
GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing was the first team to file official entries for both the Jan. 8-10 Roar Before the Rolex 24 Test Days At Daytona and the 48th Rolex 24 At Daytona.
Live coverage of the 2010 Rolex 24 At Daytona begins on SPEED on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. ET, prior to the 3:25 p.m. ET green flag, and lasts until 10 p.m. ET. Coverage resumes at 7 a.m. ET on Sunday and will run to the finish at 4 p.m. ET.

Grand Am 2010 TV Schedule - All races on Speed

GRAND-AM, SPEED Look to Continue Momentum from Successful 2009 Season
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov., 2009) - All 12 races on the 2010 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 schedule will be televised live on SPEED, GRAND-AM officials announced today.
America's premier road racing sanctioning body looks to continue momentum from the 2009 season, when SPEED viewership increased 42 percent and the number of households watching the races increased 39 percent over the 2008 season.
In addition, eight of the 10 GRAND-AM KONI Sports Car Challenge races will be televised on SPEED next season.
The 2010 Rolex Series campaign opens with the 48th running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Saturday, Jan. 30. SPEED coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET, prior to the 3:25 p.m. ET green flag, and lasts until 11 p.m. ET. Coverage resumes at 7 a.m. ET and will run to the finish at 4 p.m. ET.
GRAND-AM will continue to expand its fan-friendly activities during the events. In 2009, the pre-race fan walk and driver autograph session received overwhelming positive response from the fans, teams and drivers.
"I was amazed at the fan response this past season," said Mike Johnson, team manager for Stevenson Motorsports. "This year has been the largest single improvement I've seen in 10 years of GRAND-AM, in what they're doing to get people to the race track. This year, with everything GRAND-AM has done with the pit walk and the schedule of the weekends, has been great. Everywhere we go we feel like we're part of a major event; everyone's having a great time."
In addition to the fan-friendly initiatives at each event, GRAND-AM continues its focus on keeping fans in touch with the series through grand-am.com, developing a new feature to download the Rolex Series TV schedule to various electronic calendars. This function enables fans to stay in tune with the series by setting the broadcast dates and times with reminders on their calendars.
The next event for the Rolex Series will be testing at Daytona International Speedway on Dec. 8-9. The 2010 season kicks off with the "Roar Before the Rolex 24," a Jan. 8-10 test at Daytona for both the Rolex Series and KONI Challenge.

Ganassi on the move in Rolex Series, Brumos 250 upcoming
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 1, 2009) - TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates brings plenty of momentum to Daytona International Speedway for Saturday's Brumos Porsche 250, Round 7 of 12 of the 2009 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 season.
The 70-lap, 250-mile race, with a two-hour and 20-minute time limit, takes the green flag at 2 p.m. ET (SPEED, live), followed by the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 at 8 p.m.
Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas are coming off back-to-back victories in the No. 01 TELMEX Lexus Riley, taking sole possession of the Daytona Prototype championship lead.
Ganassi Racing has also entered a second car for the Brumos Porsche 250, the No. 02 Waste Management Lexus Riley for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regulars Kyle Busch and Scott Speed - who will both make their Grand-Am debuts. Busch will be doing triple duty, running in Friday's NASCAR Nationwide Series race in addition to Saturday evening's Coke Zero 400.
"It's going to be interesting having the two different races on the same day, and it's going to be a big challenge for both of us coming from a car that has a lot of grip and doing a lot of turning to going to the stock car, where we'll be keeping it flat out and drafting all night," said Speed, a veteran of 28 Formula One Grand Prix races before moving over to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2008. "Hopefully, we will be good enough to challenge for the win. At the end of the day, that's what we're going there to do."
Pruett won the 2008 Brumos Porsche 250 in dramatic fashion, passing Alex Gurney in the closing yards in what was then the closest finish in Rolex Series history. Gurney and Jon Fogarty are two-time winners this season in the No. 99 GAINSCO Pontiac Riley, and trail Pruett and Rojas by 11 points (175-164).
Also part of the championship scramble are SunTrust Racing's Brian Frisselle and Max Angelelli - one point behind the GAINSCO duo, while another point back are Penske Racing's Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard. Both teams are looking for their first victory of the season.
Fifth in the points are 2009 Rolex 24 At Daytona winners David Donohue and Darren Law, co-drivers of the No. 58 Brumos Porsche Riley.
Antonio Garcia and 2004 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice also were part of Brumos' winning lineup from the Rolex 24. They will be reunited for the Brumos Porsche 250, co-driving the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Racing Porsche Coyote.
Also making their Daytona Prototype debut are Dion von Moltke and Hennie Groenewald, at the wheel of Doran Racing's No. 77 McDonald's/South African Airways Ford Dallara. Groenewald, currently seeking his fourth championship in the South African Westbank V8 Supercars, finished sixth in the GT class at New Jersey Motorsports Park in May.
Competitors will face dramatically different conditions when they return to Daytona, with the Brumos Porsche 250 running in daylight for the first time. The event dates back to 1967-1985, when it began at the stroke of midnight on July 4. It's been an evening race during the Independence Day weekend since Grand-Am resurrected the event in 2000.
Tremblay, Ham Seek Third Straight Brumos Porsche 250 GT Victory
Sylvain Tremblay and Nick Ham seek to make Grand-Am Rolex Series history in the July 4 Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway. The co-drivers of the No. 70 SpeedSource Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8 are seeking to become the first Rolex Series drivers to win the same class in the same event in three consecutive years. In addition to winning the Acxiom GT class in the Brumos Porsche 250 from 2007-08, SpeedSource won the GT portion of the 2008 Rolex 24. SpeedSource also fields the No. 69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 for Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal.
A pair of independent Mazda teams is also expected to challenge after strong showings in the most recent event at Mid-Ohio. Dane Cameron and Tom Sutherland finished fourth in the No. 30 Racers Edge Mazda RX-8, while Patrick Dempsey scored a career-best sixth with co-driver Joe Foster in Dempsey Racing's No. 40 El Grado Tequila Mazda RX-8. The team now has five consecutive top-10 finishes since placing 22nd in the Rolex 24.
The hottest car in GT is the No. 87 Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche GT3 of Dirk Werner and Leh Keen. They have won three of the last four races in the No. 87, taking a 16-point lead (186-170) in the championship.
TRG also is looking to give Porsche its first GT class victory in the Brumos Porsche 250, coming off a 1-2 class finish in the Rolex 24. Andy Lally and Justin Marks share the team's Rolex 24-winning No. 67, while Spencer Pumpelly teams with team owner Kevin Buckler in the No. 66.
Pontiac will challenge for GT honors with the Banner Racing's No. 07 Drinkin' Mate GXP.R of defending champions Kelly Collins and Paul Edwards, and Stevenson Motorsports' No. 57 Bryan Mark Financial GXP.R of Andrew Davis and Robin Liddell. The two teams are second and third in the standings.
The Brumos Porsche 250 will be a one-day event for the Rolex Series competitors. A two-hour practice session begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by qualifying at 10:45 a.m. and the race at 2 p.m. For news, notes and live timing and scoring, visit www.grand-am.com, and for live updates, visit www.twitter.com/RolexSeries.

Sideways Daytona Prototype-review

Publishers note: This review was done by Dave Kennedy, an employee of SCX North America and Tommy Pintchuck who is a slot racer from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania.
Detail, speed, versatility, the Sideways Daytona Prototype's have it all.
If you're a fan of the Rolex Series and Grand American Series racing these highly detailed Daytona Prototypes will be the slot car for you. The models offer the solid performance offered by Slot It's running gear. These are the first injection molded cars made by the collaboration between Slot It and Racer and they have picked an interesting, American-specific car to reproduce. When you think about it, it's sort of surprising that this is the series they have chosen to make, but it is very welcome and is currently a hot ticket in the slotting world.
The cars come with the Orange Endbell Slot It 21.5k motor mounted inline with offset gearing. The recognizable Slot It style chassis design is as adjustable and as easy to tune as you could hope for in a chassis for a slot car. Simple to tune, easy to understand, tested by racing... a proven winner.

The front axle is adjustable with both up and down fine adjustment coming from small grub screws in towers above and positions below the front axle.

As I've said the detail is superb, as you might expect from a collaboration between Slot It and Racer. The first two decorations of the Riley DP are the first of many planned and since there are several years of this body style that could be done with no changes to the mold this is a car that we can assume slotters will have to look forward to for many years to come. Since the body's of the DP's are so close to a standard body, slot racers will be able to look forward to a VERY matched field of DP's. Printing on both the cars is very good and the colors are solid and bright. Even upon very close examination the fine printing on the logo's holds up to scrutiny.

It's worth noting the detailing on the model of the engine on this car. With a large rear window to highlight the fine detail on the model, this feature really grabs your attention when you first look at the car.

The running gear on these cars provides the slot car racer nearly endless combinations of possible configurations. The chassis, comes with an offset, inline (end bell driven) motor and there are the cut outs for a Slot It angle winder pod.
By DaveK

The new Racer Daytona prototype is a truly outstanding car. This car is made between Racer and Slot It and there was no short cuts that where taken with this car. They are redesigned a new chassis that is adjustable in the front end with grub screws and it seems to allow for a digital chip with a removable cross bracing in the chassis.

The drive train of this car is the tried and true Slot It orange end bell and hypoid gearing. The performance of the prototype is what you would expect from a slot it car, which means you expect the car to run and handle and you get both of these with this car. Also the chassis will let you run many different configurations from sidewinders to anglewinders, from orange end bells to boxer motors. The stock configuration gives the car plenty of speed right out of the box and the handling aspects of the car are very good.

The car seems to stick to the track very well with very little work. We played with one on our club track the only things that we did was remove the magnets and added S2’s and the car was running 6.5 second laps. The car had plenty of straightaway speed and did well accelerating out of the corners. We did a little tuning to the car with a minor gear change and dropped the times down to the 6.2 second range. In my opinion I feel that this car is well worth the money and is a great edition to add to any racing collection of cars. I think Racer and Slot It did an excellent job producing this car and can’t wait till next ones are available.
