New Parts from Samson Classics

Samson Classics retro wheels are now available in two widths and three diameters:

  • .240" wide for Can-Am and non-IRRA F1
  • .380" Wide for IRRA F1 and Retro Stock cars.
  • .625" diameter in the .240" width for Retro32 cars
  • .763" diameter in both widths for Can-Am and F1
  • .820" diameter in the .380 width for Retro Stock cars.

All parts are CNC-machined to the best tolerances in the industry. The wheels themselves are magnesium for low rotating mass, the wheel tubes and collars are from aluminum for strength and thread durability.

These wheels do not require soldered-on keepers, so there's never any acid flux or solder or Loctite near the bearings. The whole wheel and its two bearings is a module that is locked to the axle by a stainless steel setscrew:

Weight: The wide F1 wheels weigh 5.6 grams per pair, the narrow CanAm wheels are 4.8 grams per pair.

Width: The Can-Am wheels with their collars are .450" wide, the F1 wheels are .490" wide. The F1 wheel has a recess machined on both sides, more on the outside than the inside:

The Can-Am wheels are flat on the inside:

The rubber is extra-hard Wonder rubber. Retail price is $29.99 per pair, including bearings and setscrews, tires fully mounted and trued. If you want to use your own bearings, then kits will be available for $24.99, still with glued and trued rubber. Raceway discount is available.

A truing fixture is available on special order for $5.99 that will fit right on to your Hudy 3/32" mandrel and will lock the wheel with a guide nut.

Fantastic Slotcars from Fein Design Modell

These photos are samples of the 1/24 slot car kits available from Fein Design Modell in Germany...

This is Jörg Stephan's beautifully built Chaparral M12 model. He refined the engine with many additional lines and connections, which are not included in the kit.

Here is an excellent Honker model built by Hans Tschudin in Switzerland.

Jörg Stephan shows us his great Porsche 917-PA. To allow us to marvel at the tiny engine injectors machined in brass, he designed the two removable covers! The nozzle at the head end is milled with the hexagonal wrench size of 0.7 mm, and a hole for inserting the fuel lines. The straps for securing the caps are made of real leather of course!

News from Avant Slot

These photos of a 1/32 scale Delta Wing slot car under development by Avant Slot have leaked out onto the Internet.

No information on price, release date, or technical specifications has yet surfaced, but this prototype looks like a very good effort. It will be intriguing to see how it performs as a slot car.

Preliminary indications are that Avant Slot intend to release their model in Red (presentation) Black (LeMans and ALMS) and Silver (2013 ALMS) decorations.

The 1:1 Delta Wing was a joint development of All American Racers, Highcroft Racing and Nissan. It competed in the 2012 24 Hours of LeMans as part of the "Garage 56" experimental racing car program.

News from Samson Classics

Samson Classics is pleased to announce a new product that should be in raceways now.

Branded as "Classi-Parts", these are called "Harry's Nuts". They represent a significant change in guide attachment design, possibly the first since we stopped melting screws into the post and started using a nut.

Available in aluminum or brass, CNC-machined for superior accuracy and alignment, these nuts are driven from the top rather than from the edge as with other hex-designs. This allows the nut to be larger in diameter for greater guide stability, and also means that they fit lower and can be more easily mounted and adjusted, as there is no need for space around the nut for the wrench. Especially on cut-down guides, this is a major advantage.

Additionally, the nuts are relieved in the underside so that the contact patch is restricted to the outer periphery of the nut, and the relief also allows space for those pesky little slivers of nylon that often come off a new guide thread.

The brass versions weigh just over 1 gram each; the aluminum parts are just under 1/2 gram each.

The drivers are branded as "Classi-Tools":

Initially these are available in plain finish only, with stainless steel drive pins assembled. On special order we can add a hole and setscrew on the back end to accommodate a hex driver, to turn this into a combination tool. Just specify the hole size needed (2mm for Koford tips, 3mm for Hudy tips, or 3/32" for some others).

MSRP on these will be as follows:

Aluminum nuts: $1.59 each, or $8.49 for a pack of six (packed with individual header cards)
Brass nuts: $1.75 each, or $9.45 for a six-pack (packed with individual header cards)
Combo pack (three aluminum, three brass): $8.95 (packed with individual header cards)

Drivers: $6.95 each (packed with individual header cards) Hex driver holes added for $1.95 extra.

Driver with six aluminum nuts: $14.95 (packed with individual header cards)
Driver with six brass nuts: $15.89 (packed with individual header cards)
Driver with three of each: $15.49 (packed with individual header cards)

Regular discounts on the packs and quantity discounts on the individual nuts will be available to bonafide raceways.

Please contact Samson Classics at samsonclassics@gmail.com for more details.
