Here the new Studio 65 Ferrari 340 poses with the earlier Jaguar XK120 |
The 340 was the first of the "America" series of Ferraris; This series represents cars that were marketed towards the American market through Ferrari's American Importer, Luigi Chinetti of the North American Racing Team (NART). The 1:1 Ferrari 340 America was designed to use the new 375 horsepower Lampredi-designed V12 developed for Formula One racing. Only 11 of this model were originally built by Vignale.
A Ferrari 340 America Spider (Chassis number 0196A) competed in the 1952 LeMans 24 Hours driven by the French team of Louis Rosier and Maurice Trintignant. The highlight victory for the 340 America came at the 1951 Mille Miglia when Chassis number 0082A driven by Luigi Villoresi took the overall win.
It is worth noting that one of the 5 Ferrari 340 America Spiders known to exist today (Chassis number 0140A) was sold for more than 2.5 million U.S. dollars at a Pebble Beach auction in 2010.
