Hot Pursuit!

Slot cars with lights are neat. Slot cars with flashing lights are even better but this Hi-way Patrol car had troubles catching some of the race cars on the track so an upgrade was in the works.

The plan to transform this car into a rocket needed three things: a higher rpm motor, bullet proof drive-train and wider wheels with silicone tires. The stock motor was replaced with a Slot.it 25k and a Slot.it 28t crown, 9t pinion and axle finished the drive-train. Slot.it 19x10 plastic wheels with 20x12 S1's were used on the back end. The wheel inserts came from turning down the original wheels. Additional lead was added to keep the guide planted in the slot and provide stability on the track.
Now the modified Carrera Hi-Way Patrol goes to the track to try and run down a Carrera Porsche 935/78. Both cars weigh a hefty 107 grams. The Porsche 935 is all stock except for Ortman rear tires, a Slot.it guide and lead weight added near the guide.
On the track, both cars run very close making cat and mouse sessions very entertaining. The Hi-Way Patrol edged the Porsche 935/78, 12.350 to 12.373 seconds.

BUSTED!

Houston ALMS-Porsche wins again

HOUSTON, Texas – April 21, 2007 – Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) held off the late charge of the Herta/Franchitti Acura to score a four-tenths of a second overall victory for the second week in a row, at the Lone Star Grand Prix of Houston – the first time in American Le Mans Series history an LMP2 car has won overall twice in a row.

Dumas took the lead from the McNish/Capello Audi LMP1 car on lap #54 – 48 minutes into the event – and kept the top position all the way to the end, losing the lead to the team Maassen/Briscoe car just briefly when both cars pitted in the middle of the race. When Bernhard took the wheel, he knew the finish would not be easy.

“The RS Spyder was handling perfectly, and we had an advantage over the Acura with fresh tires, but the last 30 minutes were the hardest of my racing career. We had the lead up to seven seconds with a good re-start after the yellow flag, but I lost half that time in slower traffic, and we had to push hard in the end to hold off the Acura. Tim Cindric kept me informed lap-by-lap on the radio, and I knew exactly where the second-place car was,” said Bernhard.

“It was well worth the trip from Japan,” said Porsche Racing President Tim Cindric, who had called the race in the Far East for the Penske IndyCar team earlier in the day and was on the radio for the winning Bernhard/Dumas car.

“I arrived right after the start of the race, and told the team I was here for a victory party. With two overall wins in a row, everyone can see that Penske and Porsche have something special here,” he said, pointing out it was the team’s third overall win dating back to last season (Mid-Ohio in ’06 and last week at Long Beach).

The Lone Star Grand Prix at Houston's JAGFlo Speedway at Reliant Park will be broadcast on CBS Sports on a tape-delayed basis at 1 p.m. EDT on the next Sunday, April 29.

The team RS Spyder of Sascha Maassen (Germany) and Ryan Briscoe (Australia) finished third in LMP2 (fourth overall), solidifying their hold on second place in the class points. Bernhard/Dumas lead with 75 points, while Maassen/Briscoe have 58 points, and the leading Acura drivers have 49 points. Porsche now leads the LMP2 class manufacturer’s championship points over Acura, 79 to 65. The victory also marks the second time the Audi R-10 LMP1 car has been outdistanced by LMP2 competitors. For Bernhard, it was his 19th American Le Mans Series victory, while Dumas now has 13 ALMS wins.

Ryan Briscoe, who qualified the RS Spyder he co-drove with Sascha Maassen, said the team was struggling with the setup on the bumpy street course all weekend, and the race itself was the best the car had been since it came of the truck in Houston.

“We were only 14 seconds behind at the finish, but traffic was not kind to us during the last part of the race,” said Briscoe, who now has two second-place finishes with Sascha to go along with their class win at St. Petersburg.

Dyson Racing photo from Porsche

The Dyson Racing Porsche RS Spyders finished fifth and sixth in LMP2 (sixth and seventh overall), just ahead of the Fernandez/Diaz Acura. The Chris Dyson (USA)/Guy Smith team car was fifth after Dyson spent more than 50 minutes leading Diaz around the track in some of the best nose-to-tail racing of the season. Sixth was the Andy Wallace (England)/Butch Leitzinger (USA) Dyson Porsche, which also had a good battle with the same Acura (Leitzinger with Fernandez) near the end of the event.

In the GT2 class, the Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSR again led the class late in the race, but could not prevent the Risi Ferrari 430 from winning its fifth race in a row.

The Johannes van Overbeek/Jorg Bergmeister entry led the event with 30 minutes to go after everyone had completed their yellow-flag pit stops, but Ferrari prevailed by six second. The Wolf Henzler/Robin Liddell Tafel Racing Porsche was running fourth, a full lap out of third place when the Ferrari in that position was issued a stop-and-go penalty with just a minute remaining in the racing, giving the team its second podium finish.

The Darren Law/Seth Neiman Flying Lizard Porsche was fifth, with the Tim Pappas/Terry Borcheller Team Trans Sport Racing was sixth – their best finish of the season.

Slot Car News Project 911 Porsche

The purpose of Project 911 is to try different performance parts combinations and modifications to obtain an iron-man race car. Tracks test will be done on my targa track, SF Grand prix, the Bay Bridge and ENYR. Pictured below is a Fly Racing 911 Porsche in stock configuration. Out of the box, the 911 did very well on my track, turning 12.430 lap times. The Fly Racing type D tires kept the car in the slot and moving forward through the trickier parts of the track. Although handling was very good, the car seemed to lack power and traction.
Project 911 will receive a Ninco NC-5 motor, Ortman tires, Slot Car Corner racing axle bushings and motor wires, Slot.it: axle, 28t crown gear, 9t pinion, plastic 17x8 rear wheels and wheel inserts.
This picture shows the motor pod assembly completed. The rear axle bushings were glued in place and the motor wires were soldered to the NC-5.

Slot Car News Project 911 Specifications:
Car - Fly Racing Rally Porsche 911
Motor/motor wires - Ninco NC-5/Slot Car Corner
Pinion/Crown - Slot.it 9/28 (3.11)
Axle - Slot.it
Axle bushings - Slot Car Corner race bushings
Wheels - Slot.it 17x8 plastic press-on wheels
Rear tires - Ortmans
Weight - 83 grams

Fast lap - 93' red lane, 11.418 seconds

So far the first round of modifications to Project 911 have netted positive results and a super fun car to drive. Whenever I go out to turn some laps on the targa, the 911 is the first car I set on the track. Soon Project 911 will be heading East to the Bay Bridge, SF Grand Prix and ENYR for more tuning and more laps.

Testing for Saturday’s Inaugural KONI Challenge Race at Iowa Speedway

NEWTON, Iowa (April 20, 2007) -- Andy Lally posted a best lap at 50.176 seconds (93.272 mph) in the No. 41 Carlsen Porsche/Mitchell Global Porsche 997 during Friday's Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series test day at Iowa Speedway to top the time charts in preparation for the inaugural KONI Challenge event on the 1.3-mile road course on Saturday.

Lally, the defending Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve GT co-champion, is sharing the No. 41 machine with Ted Ballou as part of a four-car effort for the TRG team. The No. 41 machine was the quickest of 33 Grand Sport (GS) class cars to participate in the test day.

"The track is a tight and twisty road course that's going to make for some exciting racing come tomorrow," Lally said. "The whole TRG crew and all of our cars are running fast. To put up fast time of the day was really pleasing, I'm sure, for (team owner) Kevin (Buckler) and the guys after all the hard work they've done to get these cars ready for the season. The guys have been in the shop a lot of hours and working their butts off. It was a wonderful way to end the day today, and hopefully we can finish up tomorrow the same way."

Second-quickest on the day was Jeff Segal in the No. 09 Fresh From Florida/Automatic Racing BMW M3 with a lap at 50.206 seconds (93.216 mph). Segal is sharing the No. 09 machine with Jep Thornton. Boris Said was third-quickest at 50.251 seconds (93.132 mph) in the No. 80 Said Head Performance/Kinetic Motorsports BMW M3 he is sharing with Bryan Ortiz. The No. 20 Horsepower Ranch Porsche 997 shared by Ross Thompson and Hugh Plumb was fourth at 50.323 seconds (92.999 mph), and the No. 49 Marcus Motorsports Porsche 997 of co-drivers Spencer Pumpelly and Jimmy Locke completed the top five at 50.324 seconds (92.997 mph).

Boris behind the wheel.

Eric Curran turned the quickest lap of the day in the Street Tuner (ST) class at 51.813 seconds (90.325 mph) in the No. 01 Scada Pack/Georgian Bay Motorsports Chevrolet Cobalt. Curran is sharing the ride with Jamie Holtom, with whom he co-drove to a class-leading four ST victories last season. However, Curran and Holtom enter Saturday's race still looking for their first KONI Challenge Series win this season.

"The track is a lot of fun," Curran said. "It's a nice new facility. It's good to be here in Iowa. I've never even been in the state before I don't think. Figuring out the track isn't that bad. We're getting it sorted out pretty quickly. We're struggling a bit with the car, and we're a little bit down on straight line speed here to a lot of the other cars. It seems very important to draft other cars, for sure. I ran the quickest lap in a three-car draft in front of me. I think that might be key to this race. These guys are working like crazy on this Scada Pack Cobalt, trying to make it the best it can be for the race. We'll see what it brings. I don't think we have the fastest car here, but maybe the draft and being smart will be the key."

Second-quickest in ST was Kuno Wittmer in the No. 31 Acura/Cobalt Friction/Alpinestar Acura TSX with a lap at 51.954 seconds (90.080 mph) he is sharing with Nick Wittmer. Guy Cosmo was third-quickest in class at 52.116 seconds (89.800 mph) in the No. 127 Fountain Motorsports BMW 330i he is co-driving with David Tuaty, followed by Travis Walker at 52.191 seconds (89.671 mph) in the No. 76 Compass360.com/Skunk2/Hawk Brakes Acura TSX. Walker is sharing the car with Beau Buisson, and led a pair of Kensai Racing Acuras in the ST top five. Fifth-quickest was Karl Thomson at 52.208 seconds (89.641 mph) in the No. 76 Compass360.com/Skunk2/Hawk Brakes Acura TSX. Thomson's co-driver is Billy Johnson.

The Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series has a full day scheduled at Iowa Speedway on Saturday, with practice and qualifying for both classes between 8:30 and 11:15 a.m. CT. Round 3 of the 12-race 2007 KONI Challenge ST series takes the green flag at 12:00 Noon for a 192-lap race that will be subject to a two-and-a-half hour time limit, followed at 3:30 p.m. by Round 3 of the KONI Challenge GS series at 3:30 p.m., which is also a 192-lap race with a two-and-a-half hour limit. Live Timing & Scoring data and audio webcasts are available on the official web site of Grand-Am, www.grand-am.com.

Hamilton continues to impress in Bahrain

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finished the Bahrain Grand Prix whilst Fernando Alonso ended up fifth after struggling with the balance of his car throughout the race. In only his third Formula 1 race, Lewis finished on the podium for the third consecutive time. Both drivers were on two-stop strategies with Lewis pitting on laps 19 (9.9 seconds) and 44 (7.1 seconds) whilst Fernando pitted on laps 22 (8.4 seconds) and 43 (6.6 seconds). The Spaniard, winner of the last race in Malaysia, leads the Drivers’ Championship with 22 points; Lewis and Kimi who finished third today, are both also on 22 points. In the Constructors' Championship Vodafone McLaren Mercedes are leading with 44 points.

LEWIS HAMILTON
“I’m very pleased with today’s result. To have finished on the podium three times out of three is fantastic. We have definitely closed the gap to Ferrari and I know everybody will continue to push hard to improve even more in time for the Spanish Grand Prix. I was able to keep up with Felipe in the first stint but I really struggled with the balance of the car in the second. I had a lot of under steer and wasn’t able to brake as late as I would have liked. However after the second pitstop when I changed to hard tyres I was able to push again. I really enjoyed the race today and with a few more laps I might have been able to challenge Felipe for the lead.”

Carrera 1/32 Hot Rods review

How do you get the attention of slotters that see hundreds of slot cars come out every year? You carve out a niche for yourself. Carrera started going for the US muscle car niche a while ago, they were so popular that other companies may follow suit in that era. But Carrera are forging ahead with new cars that are surely focussed squarely at the US market...these hot rods follow in the tracks laid by the vintage muscle cars.

The hot rods aren't classic hot rods, they're more aimed at the bling generation rather than the baby boomers. More Boyd Coddington hot rod, less classic hot rod.

The wheels are striking, like them or not these wheels dominate the overall appearance of the cars. The wheels are large, very large. In fact, the yellow car's rear tires are about 27mm's high and the black/red car's rears are about 24mm high. And I know that many boomer slotters (and there are a lot of you aren't there?) may not like the bling feel of these rods. Carrera have made both classic and tuner versions of their muscle cars and hopefully we might see some releases that would follow the oldschool style... Moon Disc's and narrow tires with white walls maybe?

The yellow car's wheels are larger than the black/red car's wheels, this may give the yellow car a faster feel since there's got to be a difference in the final gear ratio because of that. During testing with both cars the consensus was that the yellow car had a better feel. It felt as though it was faster and more stuck down...even on wood track.

Despite the scene stealing wheels the body details on both the cars is quite conservative. Only a few printing details on the bodies, and both cars have no issues with the 2 printed stickers on the red/black car or the 3 on the yellow car. Overall the finish is well done and compliments the body lines but I do feel the paint on the back of the yellow car is a bit thin.

Inside the cars is a tightly packed bunch of wires. Even if you'd like to put weight in these cars you'd have a hard time finding room to do it...not that you'll need it given the weight of the cars.

One very cool detail that I really hope Carrera carries forward on new releases is the drop away motor pod. With one screw you can drop the rear end way from the body and lube to your heart's content all without removing the body entirely! BTW, this feature is in the early running for "cool new feature of the year"....

So if you're going to make a slot car with no hood you'd darn well better make a nice model, Carrera did. From the cylinder heads up (the bottom of the motor sits on diamond plate) the motor is a well done model.

I'd like to talk about the lights on the cars but both cars lost the front lights within a few minutes on both cars.

On plastic the dual magnets really held the cars tightly to the track and really gave a tremendous stop-on-a-dime braking feel. Both cars felt stable even with the yellow car weighing in at a stout 98 grams! The stability is probably helped by those massive tires which stick out to a full 2.5 inches wide (the red and black car has a 1/16" narrower track).

What's the verdict? Well, are you into the classic rod look or do those massive wheels do it for you? There's nothing here that will surprise the regular Carrera customer in a negative way (setting the headlights aside...yours may work just fine). They aren't race cars but they sure beg to be raced, now someone will have to start making some 1/32 city scenery for all these tuner slot cars that are being released. The cars run well on both plastic and wood and run together there's great racing ahead of you if you buy them together.
