Cheap, easy scenery lights

So I was at the local grocery store and I decided to look around at the toys. There was a small display of Lemax scenery, you know, the kind of gaudy, sappy Christmas scenery. Well some little lights grabbed my attention. There were several square lights with blue lenses. These looked like the lights I'd been looking for.

The price was right, only $5.99 for a pair of lights and $14.99 for the transformer (wall wart) to power up to 3 sets of lights. The transformer seemed a bit steap but it looked light it was worth it since I could just plug the lights in rather than use AA batteries to power them.

So they're blue....hmmmm time to be creative...where would blue lights be?

I've got it, outside a swanky club!

So I made a small bracket to hang the one light on, the other light is just glued to the side of the building, much like a large security light would be.

The lights add a nice depth to the corner of my track. And I've picked up 2 sets of white lights to add at a later date. I got the other 2 lights at Michael's crafts store. There were tons of the Lemax stuff, but none had a very realistic look. The lights are bit large, but since there isn't anything this cheap, that's even close to a plug and play set-up, these lights are a great choice if you need some lights.

These little suckers are really bright and they do tend to be very much "spot" lights, if you want more diffused light you'd have to add something on the front to soften the lights.

(must be a celeb going into the club)

Honda eyes title in 2007

This weekend will see the most thrilling climax to a Formula One season for many years and the sport will bid farewell to a legend. Honda Racing F1 Team CEO Nick Fry looks ahead to a momentous season finale and tells us why he believes the team can become a title contender in 2007.

The Championship quite literally comes down to the wire in Sao Paulo this weekend as Schumacher and Alonso slug it out for the drivers’ title. “This has been one of the most exciting seasons in many years and although we are not part of the Championship battle, it’s great that our team has been right in the thick of the action in the second half of the season”, said Fry.

As Formula One bids farewell to Michael Schumacher this weekend after more than 15 years in the sport, Fry says the Honda Racing F1 Team must take inspiration from his formidable achievements and rise to the challenge of contending both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships next season.

“With seven world titles under his belt, Michael’s remarkable career should be celebrated. His success is the benchmark to which our team must now aspire. Michael’s departure puts Jenson Button in the position of one of the top three drivers in Formula One and that is a huge opportunity for us.”

“Rewind 17 races to winter testing and you will recall that Jenson had accrued an impressive 7000 miles of running between 1 January and the Bahrain Grand Prix - before the season had even got underway. That’s far more than any other race or test driver during that same period. Compare that with Michael Schumacher who was 5th in the mileage league table with some 1400 less than Jenson. If you look at testing mileage since the start of the season, then give or take a few miles, Jenson and Michael are running pretty neck and neck.”

“Jenson has a prodigious talent and it’s up to us now to give him the tools for the job. Since his first win in Hungary, Jenson has scored more points than any other driver including the two world title contenders! In those same races we have seen Jenson at his brilliant best - in his element and providing some real edge-of-your seat racing for the fans. As for making the most of overtaking opportunities, I think he answered his critics with his race win in Hungary when he went from 14th on the grid to P1.”

“2006 was this team’s eighth year of F1 competition but only its first as a Honda works outfit. With our first win in hand we know we are on the right trajectory. We have enjoyed a much improved second half of the season but we know that there is a great deal of opportunity for improvement. We will be working at 150 per cent over the winter to ensure that we are bona fide championship contenders next season.”

Dominant diesel!

Monterey, Calif. – Audi completed a perfect season in the American Le Mans Series on Saturday as Allan McNish and Dindo Capello won for the eighth time together by taking the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Audi won all 10 Series events plus the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The diesel-powered Audi R10 TDI took seven victories in its first year of racing. Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela finished second in the other Audi.

In LMP2, Lucas Luhr and Romain Dumas took a victory for Penske Racing in their Porsche RS Spyder, beating teammates Sascha Maassen and Timo Bernhard. The win for Luhr meant he and Maassen share the class drivers championship title, their third as a pairing.

Intersport Racing's Lola of Jon Field, Clint Field and Liz Halliday finished third.

In GT1, Stephane Sarrazin held off the Corvettes of Johnny O'Connell and Olivier Beretta for an Aston Martin Racing victory in the No. 009 Aston Martin DBR9 he shared with Pedro Lamy. But the second-place finish by Beretta and Gavin wrapped up the team title for Corvette Racing and the manufacturers championship for Corvette.

Mika Salo passed Jorg Bergmeister with less than 15 minutes to give the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari F430GT of Salo and Stephane Ortelli a GT2 class win overe the Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing Porsche of Bergmeister and Patrick Long. All was not lost, however, as Bergmeister captured the class drivers championship.

More than 40 years later...a "classic look"

Revell Monogram have apparently seen fit to re-release the SAME Porsche 904 kit they did during the 60's. This model is average at best aside from the square roof line that's incorrect for the real car. This photo was taken by Mick Brown (SCI contributor and resident of the Windy City) during the Chicago Toy Show, and he's graciously allowed me to use it here.

If Revell's aim was to re-release this car as a "classic" car and not an up-to-date release of a slot car, then fine. But with the upgrade of the chassis (photos below by Alan Smith) then I would have preferred to see a new mold made for the body to get the greenhouse contours correct.

Thanks to Mick Brown for the photo of the top of the 904.
...and this photo from Alan Smith Mr. SCI himself!

Thanks Alan for use of the photo. More can be seen on SCI's gallery of images from the iHobby show.

What else awaits us from the Chi-Town toy show...we shall see.
